HTC Droid Eris

So this isn’t really gaming related but it’s technology related so i figure what the hell.  Yesterday i picked up a droid HTC Eris from the Verizon store.  I am switching from a Blackberry Storm which I have had for about 1 year.  After having this phone a day I can honestly say that i prefer it by miles to my storm.  One of the things that stands out the most to me on this phone is how responsive it is.  I click/press on something and it instantly opens.  I can recall many times on my storm when i would press on something and it would take literally minutes for it to open my text messages.  Another issue I’ve noticed that I don’t have to deal with is having to many applications open at once.   The storm has a “task manager” of sorts and if you have to many applications open at once it will simply crash the phone.  I forget to close apps all the time resulting in frequent phone restarts.  Another biggie is the app store, there are simply WAY more apps with the droid.  When the storm came out they claimed that there would be a large number of apps and that it would be a Iphone killer.  This simply isn’t true.  I’ve only had the phone a day but after using it for 24 hours I can honestly say I prefer it to the storm.  Any of you guys have this phone?  If so what are your thoughts?

Arrrggg, Pirates be Among us

Antipiratgruppen (yea, u guessed it, an anti pirate company) notice a Pirate Bay user (millions) was uploading from a Danish IP, or more specifically uploading new content.  Meaning contributing to the site, not just leaching, (u know who u are).  The anti-piracy agency, along with some cops and a warrant raided this dude’s house; they found several hard drives, and a web server.  This did not happen in the States, but has.  It seems that record companies have started to realize that arresting a single mother for downloading some of their copyrighted songs is just bad publicity.  As it would be if Ubisoft decided to sue a 20yr old kid a million bucks for downloading a copy of Assassins Creed II from Thepiratebay.com or Btjunkie.com because he thinks online authentication every time he wants to play his game is shit, and it is.

So are these companies, specifically game development companies and their associates really saving themselves money by implementing this type of authentication that Ubisoft seek, DRM (Digital rights management)?  Or are they just giving “crackers” something fun and interesting to do with their time?  One thing is for sure, their DRM wanna be money saving tactics sure are making a lot of good customers pissed and helping the booming pirate community.  If you’d like a laugh and to see how companies have tried to threaten and shut down sites like thepiratebay.com and btjunkie.com check this out :  http://thepiratebay.org/legal .  This is a hilarious list of emails and faxes between company lawyers (Microsoft, EA, Sega, to name a few) and the good folks at the Pirate Bay literally saying, ur a dip shit, I live in Sweden, not in the States, go f*** urself.  They are entertaining, lol

StarCraft II Wings of Liberty Multiplayer Beta Soon… as in 2DAY!!!

Hey, this is the sequel to the 1998 release.  This reminds me of another game that was released last Tuesday, whose developers initially released the original over 10 years ago, and by now have hopefully given us something to divulge ourselves with.  That’s not to say there are still not diehard StarCraft fans out there, u know who u are.  The full version is expected to be released mid 2010.  You all ready for Battle.Net 2.0 ?  If you have a Battle.Net account you may want to check your email, there may be a special invitation for an early install of this beta : )

**New** Aliens vs. Predator

Well let’s see, the guys that worked on the original PC version of this series back in 1999 have had a little time to think how they would like the love of their life to look and feel like.  I sure hope they hit the mark with this one.  This will come out on the 360, PS3 and the PC (thank god, wish companies would stop shortchanging the PC, for f*** sake, it’s the only platform that enthusiasts can actually get more outta the experience, graphics, game play, control).  Don’t get me wrong the 360 and PS3 are sweet, but even on my 50’’ flat panel, playing on my PC just seems like a more compelling experience.  FYI seems like the new Dead Space is not planned to be release on the PC, which pisses me off.  More on that soon.

This Aliens vs. Predator looks bas ass.  I wanna be scared and piss myself during game play, and I have a feelin this one will bring the hits.  There will be 3 different campaigns, playing as the Aliens, Predator, and the Colonial Marines, cool.  Lets just say this, I’m looking forward, and there’s not enough time to play all these sweet games that are coming out, uhhh and this one came out yesterday ; )

Nvidia names Fermi GF100 GPU

Based on the new GPU chip Nvidia will skip the 300 range of model numbers and start the new Fermi cards at the 400 level.  The names of the 1st 2 new GPU’s to be released are GeForce GTX 480 and GeForce GTX 470.  Shipping date will we the 1st quarter of this year, meaning the end of March would be the latest date.  This is going also to be Nvidia’s 1st chip to support DirectX 11.  We do not know how the price of these is going to look, but for sure it will be ridiculously high.  Some cool info, that may justify the price, they are expected to come with 1.5GB of memory with 3GB to 6GB versions to be made available labeled under the Quadro and Tesla versions.  These new GPU’s are expected to be 400% faster than previous Nvidia chips in double-precision floating point operations.

I am wondering if the Fermi name comes from Enrico Fermi who was a US citizen from Italy that was a physicist that is know for his work on the world’s 1st nuclear reactor and won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1938 for his work on induced radioactivity.  FYI he was also involved in the Manhattan Project, which was the codename for the project during WWII that developed the first atomic bomb.

Bioshock II (Play as a Big Daddy!!!)

The game came out 2 days ago, and I was planning to write something on it earlier but just got a 360 (always have been a PC gamer) and had to hook that baby up to my pre-run HDMI cable and try to beat Halo 3 (now 75% through, I have to work too u know).  So although I am excited to have finally gotten a 360, I do realize there are some sweet games coming out this month and for sure this year.  Next Tuesday the 16th Aliens vs. Predator Requiem is coming out, and it looks like a kick ass game too.  It has some of the same developers from the 1st Aliens vs. Predator, so they have had the vision from this game and how it should have looked back in the day.  Back to Rapture we go.

Umm, question.  Was the 1st Bioshock awesome?  Were the creatures in Rapture freaky and fun to kill?  Was Rapture in itself an awesome and fun city to kill your way through?  Was it not sweet to get a plasmid upgrade and be able to wield an abnormal type super power in one hand and a weapon in the other?  And the answer to all these questions is…yes.  So how much cooler would it be to do all this in a refined world and environment where you actually play as a Big Daddy?  Ohhhh, sounds like a winner. Defiantly check this one out if you’re into FPS’s, and really, who’s not?

With the expected release date not until 2011, hardcore Diablo fans can put their jockstraps on, punch themselves in the nuts and live off these screenshots until the release of one of their most anticipated games, and deal with the expected release date to keep getting shoved back.  Are you ready to return to Sanctuary?

Xbox to cancel LIVE services as of April 15th 2010 (possibly to make more room for 360 and Natal?)

As of April 15th the original Xbox LIVE services will be discontinued.  Sorry die hard Xbox fans.  This also includes games for the original that are playable on the Xbox 360 for updates.  Microsoft’s rep Larry Hryb said, “While I can’t comment on the specifics, this change will allow us to continue evolving the LIVE service with new features and experiences that fully harness the power of Xbox 360 and the Xbox LIVE community.  We did not make this decision lightly, but after careful consideration and review we realize that this decision will allow us unprecedented flexibility for future features.”  Long live advancement (sorry non-upgraders)

AMD to release 6 Core CPU’s uhh and Intel too

SOB I just got my quad : )  Advancement is good, this means that good products at lower prices.  Intel’s 6 core CPU “gulftown” processor that will be named Core i7-980x will be coming out the end of March, and will be costing over a grand.  So in response to this AMD’s 6 core processor that will be named “Thuban” 45nm chips as Phenom II x6 1075T, 1055T & 1035T models sometime in May as well.  I think it is exciting the direction the industry is going and has been going.  These new products will push software developers to utilize the full potential of this hardware and for sure give us PC gaming enthusiasts more eye candy and more kick ass games to dive into.  I don’t have a good grip on how game development teams are utilizing the multi-core technology that is already on the market, but it sure does offer a lot of potential for us to have a more intense gaming experience.  As far as I can tell this new 6 core technology would be most beneficial to ppl like my friend that is a mechanical engineer who runs multiple resource heavy programs at once to develop models for whatever parts he is working on creating… without lag.  But for the gamer, I can’t see how this would be beneficial to upgrade to this new core technology for the inflated prices it will come on the market at, maybe only for bragging rights.

Ubisoft Tries to Foil Pirates, online authentication every time????

WTF Ubisoft, really.  Can u be more lame, just as I was looking forward to the release of Assassins Creed 2 for PC u pull shit s**t.  This is not even a multiplayer game, but yet we need internet connection and to be verified though your website before we play, wow.  So I guess these corporations think they can out smart UberNerds and prevent them from figuring out a way around these types of things to deliver these games cracked and ready for play from such sites as, btjunkie or thepiratebay.

Good luck.  I have no doubt that there will be a cracked version of Assassins Creed 2 on these sites on the date of release if not sooner.  So are these measures really preventing ppl from pirating their software or enraging ppl that are legit customers and guiding them down the road to Piratesville?  During Steams holiday sale where they were offering kickass games for 10 bucks and under, one wise nerd quoted, “Steam is fighting piracy with reasonable priced games”.  How true.  So if you own or wish to buy any of Ubisoft’s lineup of games, including: Assassin’s Creed series, Beyond Good and Evil, Brothers in Arms, Far Cry series, Might and Magic, Myst, Prince of Persia, and Tom Clancy’s series.  If only these corporations would catch on and wise up, rather than pissing ppl off along the way to save some money, they are really hurting their own image and their bottom line in the end.  Geez, it’s not like they netted 109 million last year with total revenue at over 1.4 billion.
