Multi-Core CPU’s Still Not Being Utilized

Intel and AMD are constantly pumping out new processors with more and more processing cores.  But can current OS software really utilize all that processing power?  Today a Quad Core CPU is easily affordable to most people.  Multi-Core CPU’s have been out for years now and software is still being written in a way that doesn’t utilize the processing power of Multi-Core CPU’s.  Use of Multi Core applications may require a rethinking of windows “Although modern operating systems do true multitasking and scale with the addition of more cores, Probert thinks that to take full advantage of the new wonderfully powerful hardware we have, it will require a reworking and rethinking of Windows.  Of course, with the rapidly growing number of cores, especially in light of Intel’s experimental 48-core CPU, an alternative method would be to devote at least one discrete core to each application.” Says Toms Hardware.

A dedicated core for each application is a interesting concept… so what would you do when you have more then say 4 applications open on a Quad Core Processor?  I’m curious to see how this plays out over the next 10 years as we can expect the amount of cores being used to easily double.

New Layout and Site Work Complete

Hello again,

Just wanted to let you all know that the website work has been completed and that everything is back up and running.  Just to give you guys a idea of what we did we added a second sidebar to the left side of the page to make the layout a little easier to read in some cases.  Also kept you from having to scroll ALLthe way down the page to find some pieces of information.  We also added a recent comments bar to help you guys keep on the current conversations.  Let us know what you think of the layout and any suggestions that you might have!!! Thanks guys!

Site Work

Just wanted to let you all know we will be doing some minor site work at 4PM CST.  During this time the site may jump up and down but the site should be up and running again within a couple of hours.  Have a great day!

Phenom II X6 Release Date and Pricing

AMD will be releasing it’s new 6 core processor coming up here shortly.  The official release date for the Phenom II X6 processor is April 26.  This is good news for those of you who have been holding off on building a new computer until now.  Some of you who have just purchased new machines may be thinking “oh man now I have to buy new hardware”.  This may not be the case however, is a large number of current Motherboards that will be supporting the new X6 chip so you may find you don’t need to upgrade any hardware at all.  This is a nice surprise for those of us who can’t afford to buy a new motherboard, processor and ram every time there is a new release.  Here is a list of current versions that are going to be released:

  • Phenom II X6 1090T: 3.2GHz / 3.6GHz / 125w $295
  • Phenom II X6 1075T: 3.0GHz / 3.5GHz / 125w (launch later this year)
  • Phenom II X6 1055T: 2.8GHz / 3.3GHz / 125w, 95w $199
  • Phenom II X6 1035T: 2.6GHz / 3.1GHz / 95w
  • Phenom II X4 960T:   3.0 GHz/ 3.4GHz / 95w

One of the most suprising aspects of the new Phenom II X6 processor is it’s current price point.  The top model is only going to ring in at $300 — $350 US.  While this isn’t cheap it is far cheaper then Intel’s Core i7 980X Extreme Edition chip which is going to be priced at over $1000 US.  Now while this pricing could change it’s apparent which is going to be the better buy for the masses.  However I am sure that there will be many who will be shelling out for Intel’s new processor.  Now while I am sure that Intels Core i7 980X Extreme Edition chip is going to be crowned the king of processors it’s hard to argue with the price point of AMD’s Phenom II X6.  It will be interesting to see how benchmarks come out on these two new processors.  If the performance difference is marginal, something like 10 — 15% then it’s going to be hard for Intel to justify it’s $1000 entrance fee.

Asus currently has a list of motherboards that will be compatible with the new X6 processors.  You can views those here.

Gears of War 3 for April 2011

Well, I’m glad to hear this, although it may be hard to remember this far in advance, but a good game is a good game and the 1st 2 were not disappointing, so I’m sure this will rock too.  Thanks for the story 1up :  Gears of War 3 appears to have been revealed a little earlier than Microsoft and Epic intended. The announcement you see in the picture below appeared on the Xbox Live Spotlight this morning sans an official announcement.  The announcement mostly serves as official acknowledgment for what we already know; namely that Gears of War 3 exists and that it’s launching April 2011. This announcement was more than likely set to go live following Cliff Bleszinski’s appearance on Jimmy Fallon, but the timing was never reset after he was bumped by Justin Bieber.  Rumored details emerged yesterday, suggesting that the series will ditch its brown and grey palette for the bright colors of summer. Underwater levels and additional tweaks to the signature cover system are also expected.  Bleszinski is set to appear on Jimmy Fallon’s show this Monday, so we’ll likely get our first real look at Gears of War 3 then. Until then, consider this one confirmed.
