Battlefield 3: A Revolutionary Title?

At GDC dice showed of a gameplay video of its upcoming title Battlefield 3 and it sure looks amazing.  They are using a new animation system that makes in game characters look extremely life like.  This trailer was interesting in the fact that it appeared so life like the first time I watched it that I found myself tensed up at the end of it.  That is the first time that has ever happened to me when watching anything video game related.  Battlefield 3 looks to be pushing visuals to the next level and making Crysis look like yesterdays news.  What I found most impressive about this trailer is this are pre-alpha/alpha images so it will be very interesting to see what the final product will look like.  There has been a great deal of hype of Direct X11 and its use and inclusion in the title.  To date hardly any games support DX11 let alone utilize it.  Battlefield 3 could be the first game to do so.

DICE also stated, which I found surprising, that the PC platform will be the lead platform for this title and with the features it announced for the game it’s quite apparent.  PC owners of the game will be able to utilize DX11,  64 player combat and dedicated servers.  Consoles players will obviously not be able to use dedicated servers or DX 11 and will be limited for 24 player combat.  That is a dramatic difference between the pc vs console platforms and it should be interesting to see how they deal with the play size differences.  The size of the maps would have to  be different as you couldn’t have 64 players in a rat race map and in the same token you can’t have 24 players on a large rush/conquest map.

DICE has also mentioned that they are making the destruction far more believable in Battlefield 3 and that buildings will crumble and chip away as they would in much more realistic manner instead of just disappearing into a cloud of dust and reappearing as rubble.

Here is what we currently know about the game feature wise:

  • Character animations will be powered by ANT and focused on realism.
  • Level destruction will be “believable.”
  • AI characters and multiplayer characters have different animation sets
  • Captured their own war audios (bullets, tanks, helicopters, etc) at different distances to ensure realism
  • Better audio cues for certain actions, more easily able to listen for threats
  • Better, more immediate post release content
  • More unlocks than BFBC2
  • A good balance between customization of your character and not having “pink rabbit hat(s)”
  • Will have co-op
  • BF3’s team is almost twice as big as the team for BFBC2
  • Balanced pacing in single-player mode, with highs and lows.
  • Significant narrative that goes with the SP mode
  • Original story, not based on Bad Company.
  • Direct X11 Support
  • Return of 64 player support

Can…..Not…..Wait. BF3 looks EPIC, it will be nice to have a heavy hitter with decent content and full PC support. Its been a while since we had one like this.

I really hope BF3 lives up to its predecessor, BF2. The original BF series is, in my opinion, the best FPS series ever made; I will be putting that to the test when BF3 is released!

the 1st time I watched the trailer I thought it looked alittle washed out and resembled Medal of Honor which isn’t a bad thing…BUT I whatched it a second time in full 1080p and I have to say so far I’m impressed the visuals have depth and it seems like they have a decent start on a story arc ( BC2 has great multi but I thought the campain was very linear except for finding collectables and MCOM stations -please don’t be haten’-) So I will be looking forward to seeing more in the months ie. PAX, G3, etc, etc…!!!

From the video, I must say that their censorship of vulgar words is rather… creative.

Have your say
