Darksiders Franchise Maybe Saved by it’s Creators

Later this month, all of the unsold assets of THQ will go up for auction including the unclaimed Darksiders franchise. Bidding started on Monday, April 1st; and all final bids will be required by April 15th. The court will have to approve of the final bids but there is still some key franchises up for bids including Red Faction, Darksiders, MX series, Homeworld, Costume Quest, and Stacking. My love for the Darksiders franchise has been no kept secret through THQ’s dissolving procedures; there has been some recent light though, for the future of the franchise. Via Games Industry International, and confirmed by Destructoid, Crytek USA, the studio that was formed by the former head of Vigil Games, David Adams, looks to bid on the franchise and bring it back home to it’s creators. 36 former Vigil Games employees are now at Crytek USA, including Adams and former Vigil co-founder Ryan Stefanelli.”Going to bid on Darksiders IP. Put 7 years of heart and soul into that franchise, and I think it belongs at home with its creators.” was the tweet from Adams last week that got the hope ball rolling and me extremely excited. Stefanelli told Destructoid “”When the Darksiders IP goes up for auction, Crytek will be bidding for it,” to ad more confidence that the Darksiders IP may head back home. Since the first title, I have had a deep love and appreciation for the franchise. It did nothing new, nor revolutionary; but it refined concepts and put it in a captivating world. Heaven and Hell releasing the apocalypse; framing War, one of the Four Horsemen for preempting the war; and Death fighting to find salvation for Humanity, War, and himself. This is just the first two games, imagine a third and fourth featuring the last two Horsemen and built on the Cryengine; one can dream. One last thing, bring the amazing Jesper Kyd back for the soundtracks. The bidding process is expected to be resolved by mid-May, any new information I hear on the auction or of the Darksider franchise, I will update.

Pretty fitting I posted the article with a picture of Death riding Despair. Despair is about all I had when no one picked this franchise or Vigil up in the bankruptcy proceedings. Darksiders 3, running on Cryengine 3 or 4 (whatever is available), bring in yet another awesome ensemble of voice actors, and have Jesper Kyd compose another top notch score; what a fever dream.

Have your say
