Data Centers that OWN

Ever wonder what some of the worlds biggest data centers look like; well here are some pics of the world’s larges to give you some insight into these monsters.  The first set of pics are from Microsoft’s Data Center in Chicago, and the second set are from and ISP in Sweden named Bahnhof.  Their facility is located in a Cold War-era underground nuclear bunker and gives its employees exotic fish and waterfall fountains to keep them distracted every day.

Probably the coolest datacenter I’ve been to is Perot Systems (now owned by Dell) in Plano Tx. They actually have 2 Datacenters at this site. The 1st one is so meticulously designed and layout out, that every strand of wire under the raised floor is blueprinted and traced in so where is no need to every raise the floor to find where the lead is at the junction. Then on top of that – it is so neatly layed out (and they’re so proud of it) that the main walkway’s are plexiglass so they can so it off.
Lastly – outside the datacenter – they have an Atrium that has a working ENIAC in it, among other historic computing items. I have some pics of the atrium. Pic’s of the data center were not allowed. Their 2nd D.C. was still under contruction while I was visiting – but was just a cool as they were using liquid cooling between server racks. Not often you want liquid of anykind running through a D.C.

I love data centers. The hum of the Equipments drives me crazy and to see all those flashing lights that are right out of a sci fi movie makes me all warm and fuzzy inside 😛
