Games We Miss: Sim Copter
Today I thought I would do something a little bit different. Instead of talking about new upcoming games or current games I thought I’d talk about an old favorite of mine. It’s a game that was mildy underrated but brilliant all the same. That game is Sim Copter.
Why liked it:
Sim Copter was released in 1996. You’d grab a helicopter, fly around a city, complete missions, put out fires, stop aliens and even blow up buildings *yes there was a military helicopter*. It was the customizeability that made it great. In addition to having a large number of helicopters to fly around you could import your own Sim 2000 cities, insert your own drive in videos, modify the radio and there were a large number of cheats and buts to boot. You could also fly around a military helicopter and “stop” large riots which was incredibly entertaining. Seeing your creations come to life and be able to fly around in them was just incredibly satisfying.
What we miss:
Like I said Sim Copter was a simple game but it brought us back to a time when games were designed to be fun, simple and most importantly customizeable. That is why we could play sim copter over and over again because you could load endless amounts of content into it and still have fun. It’s that customizeability that has all but disappeared from the gaming industry expect for indie developers that I missed most about this game.
I’d love to see a remake of this game assuming we could load our new Sim City cities into it and be able to fly around and walk in. Sadly I don’t see this happening anytime soon because of all of the cloud integration and DLC content deliverables.
