Netflix News…. None of it Good!

In a Press Release issued today Starz has announced that they have ended negotiations with Netflix to renew streaming rights of Starz content. The current agreement will expire February 28th 2012 and all content will be removed from Netflix streaming.

It was rumored that negotiations broke down due to Starz insistence that Netflix adopt tiered pricing even after they have already implemented a huge pricing increase separating the disc and streaming options of their service. This means losing access to Starz series like Spartacus and Camelot and also losing content from Sony and Disney of whom Starz has exclusive rights to. Making matters worse this bombshell was released on the same day that the new pricing model kicks in for Netflix!

So how many people are thinking about dumping Netflix? In my opinion they had better post some serious content for streaming to justify the increase if they want me to keep paying! This news isn’t boding well for my decision into keeping the service either!

This does sort of suck but Netflix still has hundreds of shows taht I am still watching. And the fact of the matter is even with their new pricing model I still save tons of money vs the alternative. The biggest hurdle that has to be overcome this decade is the “bundled” pricing tiers that cable companies use. Lets face it the only thing that I actually want to watch on TV is sports. I don’t care about HGTV, TNT, TBS, DISCOVERY (because it’s reality shows now) or any of the other channels. Headway is already being made in this matter in the terms of PS3. PS3 is going to be getting both NHL and NFL for purchase without then need for a cable/satellite contract. I honestly think at least 50% of people only get cable for the sports. I don’t have a stat to prove that but everyone I’ve ever talked to says the same thing.

well, Starz wanted Netflix to tier price their content costing us more which is uncalled for being how much we are starting to pay this month it’s just a shame being that Netflix sparked the streaming revolution

with the content getting better at least with TV shows being put up in their entirety I’m gonna hold on for a little longer with bated breath and hope for something to entice my loyalty!

I’m glad that I have already watched the Spartacus series but will be sad that I won’t get to see the second season instantly through my console. With HBO going it’s own route I can see Stars pulling the same deal. With the price increase and now loosing another big player, Sony being the first, Netflix better pull a killer game plan to keep this subscriber.

Never bought into it to begin with but all that pressure on console developers to enact this Netflix integration into consoles has become all but in vain as the only reason i ever used it was to let my daughters watch Disney content…. and now that that is out, never again.
