Nintendo Direct: The Year of Luigi
Early this morning Nintendo held another one of their streaming announcement videos, Nintendo Direct. Opening was Iwata-san, and his hat made my day. This year for Nintendo, will be the year of Luigi. Luigi, outside of Luigi’s Mansion has played second banana to Mario, but today there are plenty of games that feature the green clad plumber. Here is what Nintendo has in store for the first half of 2013.
Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon
Release date: March 24th, only on the 3DS
Luigi will be going through several mansions this time and he is bringing along his trusty Poltergust 5000. There will be new ways to use the Poltergust, as to solve puzzles and to help with some platforming. There is a new darklight device to add to Luigi’s repertoire. The darklight device is used to help find things that have disappeared in the mansions. Boo will make an appearance as will a new 4 player co-op mode taking place in what has been named, the Scarescraper.
Mario and Luigi: Dream Team
Release date: Summer, only on the 3DS
The Mario and Luigi RPG franchise has not seen a release since Bowser’s Inside Story back in 2009. This summer we are getting a new entry in the series that will take place in Luigi’s dreams. Mario will enter Luigi’s dreams, while Luigi will have special powers to help Mario through out the adventure.
Mario Golf: World Tour
Release date: Summer, only for the 3DS
The title is being developed by Camelot, who has developed the Mario Tennis and Golf titles since their inception. There hasn’t been a proper Mario Golf title since the GameCube. They are focusing on creating unique courses, as well as fine tuning the mechanics. Last years Mario Tennis Open, also developed by Camelot, on the 3DS was a worth while entry to the Mario Sports series. I am excited to see what they can bring to the table with this latest entry.
New Super Mario Bros. U – New Super Luigi U
Release date: 2013, available on the Wii U eShop
This will be a sizable DLC offering for New Super Mario Bros. U that changes all the courses and focuses on Luigi as the main character. It will be available in the Wii U eShop sometime this year. \
Animal Crossing: New Leaf
Release date: June 9th, only on the 3DS
The newest Animal Crossing is almost upon us and this time you will be the mayor of the town, no more crappy chores for you by that domineering raccoon, Tom Nook. In New Leaf, you will be able to customize not only your house but the town as well. There will be a main strip full of shops so that all your needs are in one central location. Your house’s exterior will be customizable as well. You will be able to see and share house models via street pass.
The last bit of the video dived into what is coming to the eShop over the next coming months. Here is what’s coming.
First and foremost there is a new channel on the Miiverse specifically for The Legend of Zelda franchise. The new channel is available today.
Release date: March 28th, Demo on March 14th, only on 3DS
A title developed by Game Freak, best know for Pokemon, is a 2-D platformer were you collect notes and attack to create music. The title reminds me of the music based gameplay associated with Q Entertainment’s titles like Rez, Lumines, and Child of Eden. There will be a Super Mario World like over world, consisting of 8 worlds. There will be a bonus stage featuring music from Pokemon.
