Battlefield 3 hates rats
I really dont know how anyone can take PETA seriously anymore, from over the top demonstrations that really dont make any sense to objectifying women in the process, usually for what seems like a cry for attention. I agree with some of their ideals such as being against killing animals so rich people can troll in style or companies putting lipstick on a rabbit and shooting it in the face to find out if lipstick is bullet proof. And Im certainly against animal cruelty, being an animal lover myself. But PETA is at it again, the animal rights organization has taken issue with EA and DICE over the killing of a virtual rat in Battlefield 3. They are of course entirely fine with the brutal manner in which the player slaughters enemy soldiers throughout the game, not mention the thousands upon thousands of blood splattering kills happening in multi-player. For those of you who havnt yet played through the campaign there is a scene where you have to silently get from point A to point B without detection lest you catch a few bullets with your face. At a point of your sneaking under cover of night you come upon a rat in a trench, this rat takes a liking to your finger tips and starts to bite away, you actually try to shew the rat away without success, upon realization that the rat is making enough commotion over your fingers to get you caught a screen prompt comes up to press/click a button, clicking said button activates you taking out your combat knife and impaling the rat and picking it up and throwing it aside. PETA sees this 10 second scene out of a 6hr campaign, as having “a brutalizing effect […] on the young male audience.”, its not the hundreds of enemy faces blown clean off or the close up elaborate knife kill animations, its the killing of one rat to survive a specific section of the game that will drive our youth to painting the streets with blood. Just male youth though, apparently the female audience is impervious to such things. Also I remind you that DICE actually took a sensitive approach to this part of the game, your character attempts to shew the rat off to no avail, so really the rat committed suicide by desperate soldier. I wanna be on PETA’s side but they make it increasingly difficult to be taken seriously when they behave like children with their over the top tantrums over a cow being humanely slaughtered so that people can eat, or when they complain about the killing of a virtual rat by a virtual soldier in a virtual world that doesn’t exist.
