Bulletstorm Didn’t Make Any Money… and Thats Ok

Apparently Epic’s newest AAA release didn’t make any money for Epic, according to Mike Capps, president of Epic Games .   Despite it’s critical success, 82% average for PC  and 84% for consoles, Bulletstorm create any revenue for Epic.  Bulletstorm sold less then 300,000 units across all platforms during the first 3 months of it’s release.

EA was quoted saying “It’ under performed”.

Regardless of it’s failure to sell  Epic’s President said that he doesn’t regret devloping Bulletstorm, and they are ok with the fact that the game didn’t make them any money.  Bulletstorm was developed by People Can Fly (creators of Painkiller).

Epic’s president will be giving a speech at GDC in europe next month called “Size Doesn’t Matter:  How Epic Brings AAA Attitude to Every Game, from Gears of War 3 to Infinity Blade”.  According to Kotaku they want to hold this conference to dispel the idea that they are a studio with a unlimited budget and no development times to deal with, because they don’t.  There are rumors that Mike Capps will also address why Bulletstorm performed poorly at the sales counter despite good reviews.

I think I can understand while the game performed poorly, I don’t think anyone really knew what to think of Bulletstorm or what it was for that matter.  .  The idea of people flying around with arc whips could make question it’s… seriousness?   Let’s look at Gears of War 3, it has a story of humanity struggle against extinction or great adversity and their desire to survive, that is something people can relate to or perhaps Max Payne, a story of a man out for vengence because of what happened to his family.  These are all stories people can relate to, something people might want to ‘be a part of’ where as Bulletstorm didn’t give that vibe.  I remember when one of my friends showed me the game  I wasn’t that impressed and I believe I was fairly confused.  Having said that, it doesn’t mean it was a bad game, because it wasn’t but the first impression wasn’t that good and as we know, first impressions are everything.  What do you guys think?
