The countdown to Multiplay’s i49
Local Area Network (LAN) parties are where like-minded people get together to play games in the same location. The largest LAN is in the UK is the Insomnia Gaming Festival, or Iseries as it’s known. Fundamentally Insomnia is a gaming event for all ages, where gamers and industry leaders alike come together to celebrate games in all their forms. “Insomnia LAN Guide“
There are just 144 days left to go until the biggest UK gaming event this Summer, i49, hosted by Multiplay. I’ll be there along with some of the guys from computer club where we’ll be kicking back at the International Centre, located in Telford, Shropshire. The event hosts some of the biggest eSports tournaments in Europe and each year hosts the UK qualifiers for the World Cyber Games (WCG). As well as all that, you can team up for MMO or co-op gaming and generally play what you want when you want. I’m planning on positioning myself in the MMO area – I’ll be perfectly at home there! Alongside the gaming areas and competative tournaments, there are also exhibitions from industry specialists as well and Multiplay have put together a really good LAN guide to help you know what to expect when you arrive: http://static.multiplayuk.com/images/content/LAN_guide.pdf. You can also look forward to the Opening Ceremony and the famous Insomnia Pub Quiz. When you need to crash you have three options for hotels; two on-site (The Holiday Inn and The International) and one which is a five minute walk away (Grays Hotel), all of which are offering discounts for attendees. Alternatively you can camp – there is plenty of space available.
The event officially starts on Friday 23rd August and runs until Monday 26th August 2013, but for an additional £15.00 on your ticket price you can get early access to the venue so that you can get set-up in advance. This is what most people choose to do and so it’s quite busy on the Thursday when doors open at about 6pm, so you might consider leaving your arrival till a bit later to miss the initial rush. There are a number of different ticket types you can get to take part in the action depending on what you are after:
BYOC (Bring your own computer)
Tickets cost £64.40 for the entire weekend, game how you want when you want.
TUP (Turn up and play)
Tickets cost £55.00. This gets you entry for the entire weekend, just turn up, get ready for the tournaments and jump into your matches on one of the event machines.
Group BYOC or Group TUP tickets
If you’re booking for a community or a team.
Weekend, day entry and press passes
Super versatile to fit anyone’s needs.
You should check the website to see in detail what each of the passes confers to the holder, especially when it comes to the weekend and day passes. You may also want to note that if you want to play with your friends, but don’t have a rig of your own, you can purchase a BYOC ticket and then opt to hire one of the hire rigs available for the event – a standard rig will set you back £65.00 on top of the ticket price for the weekend, while a pro gamer package will cost you £75.00. You can also opt to hire a monitor, if you don’t fancy lugging your’s all the way to the event!
Multiplay have an amazing website that is dedicated to their gaming events and it literally has everything you need to know, check out the site at: http://iseries.multiplay.co.uk/i49. If you are planning to be there let us know, it would be great to meet up. Why not keep up-to-date with the latest news on this event via our Twitter feed @gamersblogbytes.

MMORPG Update: Love is in the air
Valentine’s Day is quickly approaching and love is in the air with a number of the MMO’s putting on special Valentine’s Day events, the various festivals emulated in-game are fantastic for injecting something new and getting your friends involved in some fun and games. Three MMO’s with big events are World of Warcraft, Guild Wars 2 and RaiderZ, I’m going to take a closer look at what you can expect and start spreading that Valentine’s spirit.
WoW does a fantastic job of adding those in-game extras and rewards while tying it all neatly together with a storyline to boot – to be honest, no-one does it bigger! The Valentine’s event runs from February 10th until the 23rd and you can get involved by visiting any of the following major cities of Azeroth: Stormwind, Ironforge, Darnassus, Shattrath, Dalaran, Thunder Bluff, Orgrimmar, Undercity.
There will a dungeon encounter available (using Dungeon Finder) with Apothecary Hummel that will drop both special holiday loot and more useful high-level items (level requirement is 89) as well as a special main quest line and daily quests. You can also look forward to:
- Mounts (Big Love Rocket, Swift Lovebird).
- Pets (Toxic Wasteling, Truesilver Shafted Arrow).
- Amorous Accessories (Romantic Picnic Basket, Forever-Lovely Rose, The Heartbreaker, Vile Fumigator’s Mask, Dinner Clothes).
- Titles (If you complete the fifteen Achievements of Love Is in the Air, your character will gain the special title The Love Fool).
- Seasonal bonuses (buffs for your character).
- Achievements (Love Is in the Air currently offers a total of 160 achievement points, split over 15 achievements and 1 meta-achievement).
GW2’s Black Lion Trading Company has some exclusive items which will be available until the 18th February, you’ll be able to pick up a Bouquet of Roses (which will grant you 5 unique skills), Red Dye Packs containing red and pink dyes to dye your armour, and a 20% discount on Self Style Hair Kits that lets you choose a completely new hair style.
And just in time for Valentine’s Day RaiderZ brings you sweet chocolate that melts in the mouth and also has the handy benefit of raising your life energy. Unfortunately though, it doesn’t look like there will be any Valentine’s costumes for RaiderZ players this year, but perhaps they have saved those for the Lunar New Year Festival, I’m led to believe that costumes are a definite for this one. In-game events include “Weaponized Gambling” where defeating monsters drops an item that generates a random effect when thrown on the ground and the chocolate broomstick mount which allows you to target the objects of your affection with a cupid’s arrow emote.
Detailed information on any of the events above can be found by visiting the associated websites using the links below:
World of Warcraft: http://battle.net
Guild Wars 2: http://guildwars2.com
Remember to check your servers game calendar for your specific start and end times and whatever you are doing this Valentine’s Day I hope you have a good one.

Where is the Mists of Pandaria in-game launch event?
Although Blizzard have announced that there is going to be several official global launch events for the release of MoP in the US, France, Germany, Italy, Russia, Spain, Sweden, the UK, Brazil, Mexico, Chile, and Taiwan; there has not as yet been any news of an in-game launch event. But, the lack of any news doesn’t mean that there isn’t a plan in the pipeline, especially since Blizzard created in-game launch events for both the Wrath of the Lich King and Cataclysm releases.
In 2008 Wrath of the Lich King featured a full on zombie invasion where infected crates appeared in-game and began to infect the players themselves, the players could then choose to cure themselves by visiting one of the Argent Dawn within 10 minutes who had also appeared throughout the world. If you were not cured (either because you ran out of time or chose not to be) you then became a zombie who was treated as an enemy by all other players and NPCs except other zombies, and you had the ability to then infect other players.
And again in 2010 for the Cataclysm release, if you were allied to the horde you were called to take back the Echo Isles from a tribe of trolls called the Darkspears, led by their leader Vol’jin, after being ousted by the witch doctor Zalazane. If you were alliance you received a similar call to join the fight to take back Gnomeregan led by High Tinker Mekkatorque, following the betrayal by his chief advisor Thermaplugg.
Further details of the launch events can be found on the Blizzard website, members of the dev team will be at these events where possible so you can meet them and get your copy of the game signed. You will also be able to purchase both standard and collectors editions. In the meantime I’ll be looking out for signs of any in-game launch events, please do let us know if you’ve heard of anything, it seems like a lot of players are asking the question.
