Game stores are closing left and right, and that saddens us all. That being said, there are some great things to be found at those final clearance sales. Today, I got a copy of Star Wars Episode I: Racer for Nintendo 64 for $6. Cool, right? Well… I also kinda got a custom-made, locally printed, colossal Gears of War 3 Poster
Couch and guitar present for scale... and use.
There are many things that label me a nerd, though that geeky coffin got another nail in it today. If posters in general are a tad juvenile, game posters must be puerile. So what about one that’s bigger than the 40″ HDTV on the opposite wall? Bad social stigma comes with such a thing being in ones private residence, I’m sure… But you know what? I don’t care. In the words of Jim Belushi, if you gotta eat it, don’t nibble. My media room deserves nothing less than whole-hog nerd decor. (I’ll just have to break that room to women gently…)
Side note: I’m a graphic designer. I even designed the logo for this very site. I randomly stumbled upon a sale that had a one-of-a-kind poster for one of my favorite games designed and printed at a local shop. Coincidence? Absolutely. But it’s still how I justify buying this asinine thing.
So Christmas is just around the corner and a lot of great games are hitting the shelves to cash in on the shopping frenzy. So I put together a list of games that are a MUST! These games are what make gaming great and fun. They are the games that will be on everyone’s letters to Santa. I give you the Holiday Must Haves:
#10 Dead Island
So Halloween is over but zombies are fun all year long. First person shooter mixed with RPG elements makes for a lot of gameplay. Also four characters to choose from and co-op modes allow for different playthroughs making Dead Island a good mix of fun and blood.
#9 Gears of War 3
Gears of War helped launch Xbox in the early days and now the 3rd installment keeps us going. Great story and gameplay gives us a new Gears experience with a familiar feel. New multiplayer modes and some fixed issues really make Gears a game worth getting.
#8 Star Wars: The Old Republic
Ok seriously, why wouldn’t you want this game? Star Wars fans have been begging for this game since we heard the first rumors and now it is within our grasp. Be a Jedi, Sith, or Bounty Hunter?? Sign me up! BioWare has taken much time and care with this title and the videos we have seen so far look amazing. If it can deliver we may have a new king of MMOs.
#7 The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
Skyrim will have all the best RPG elements you could ask for. Mutliple ways to customize class, armor, and weapons mixed with hours upon hours of gameplay, this game will have you coming back for more. Probably an instant classic waiting to happen.
#6 Super Mario 3D Land
Ok so I may catch some crap for this one. However think about this: Anything Mario sells like crack in the gaming world and 3DS gamers have been waiting for their fix. 3D Land is going to be a HUGE Christmas seller and if you own a 3DS you have no excuse to not have it. It is after all the next Mario game! Nuff said.
#5 Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3
I know what your thinking, “MW3 only at 5??” To answer I say yes. If it added something different to the campaign than the usual I would rank it higher. I would be stupid to not mention this juggernaut of a game. Usually always great graphics, gunplay, and most played multiplayer makes this another for sure record breaker. Sales for this game will be insane.
#4 Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception
Uncharted is another series of games that deliver a great product everytime. One of the better storylines in a video game you will see. This game gives a good mixture of stealth and all out shoot outs. A good online component rounds this game out to give a good gaming experience.
#3 Assassin’s Creed: Revelations
Let me ask you this. When have you played a bad Assassin’s Creed? Didn’t think so. Revelations looks like it going to bring us more of what we love. More hidden blade stabs, rooftop hopping, and haydiving. I will say Assassin’s Creed is on the verge of becoming a recycled product, meaning they aren’t giving us much of anything new, but the story really drives this game. So I am willing to continue that story.
#2 Battlefield 3
Yes yes I put BF3 above MW3. Keep in mind we have seen they same thing with Call of Duty games. Bad Company was an offshoot of Battlefield. So this is the first true Battlefield game we have seen in sometime and I thought it delieverd. A good campaign with a co-op feature, another fun multiplayer, and tons of unlocks will keep your attention for a while. People have said this could knock off MW3……so far so good.
#1 Batman Arkham City
Ok if you can only have one game for Christmas, this is it. Arkham City has been getting 10 outta 10’s. It has been called the best game period. I am usually a big multiplayer guy but Batman BIFF’d me right in the face. This game has everything. An open world and a fantastic story as well as your favorite voice actors for Batman and Joker….possible game of the year.
Well that is my ten games that I think should be under the tree this year. Obviously you could re-arrange the list and it would still make sense and I know there are games that I didn’t mention that will be great too. Even if I made a top 50 list I am sure someone will think of a game not listed. Like I said from what I have seen so far with trends and what people are buying or waiting for, these seem to be the big ones. Hopefully I get to unwrap a few of these myself.
To celebrate the upcoming release of Gears of War 3 I thought I’d show some videos from one of the 360’s defining series: Gears of War! Now anyone who knows me has heard my utter contempt for Gears of War 2 multiplayer and if I play it I loudly voice my frustration and discontent for the mechanics in it!!!! Now, that said I do love the campaign, the story is truly “Epic” in every meaning of the word and the graphics have always screamed NEXT-GEN. So I have high hopes for the 3rd installment in the series and judging by the Beta I’m thinking I’ll get my wish….maybe.
Gears of War was released by Epic back on “Emergence Day” November 7, 2006 the day when on the planet Sera, 14 years after the end of the Pendulum Wars (War between the various factions of humans for control of Imulsion a highly desired power source buried deep within the planets crust), A new threat to humanity emerged to plot its demise, the Locusts. The surviving governments joined together to form the Coalition of Ordered Governments or COG for short, to fight off this new enemy from deep within the bowls of Sera.
This is where Marcus Fenix comes in…..
After a Devastating blow to the Locust horde at the end of Gears of War, they come back with a vengeance in Gears of War 2 revealing that the horde has a Queen directing all the movements against humanity.
Now Marcus and Dom of Delta squad must go deep into Sera to find what has destroyed all the cities on the surface save one Jacinto. The story for this installment was truly dramatic showing the horrors of war and what some do to save the ones they love….
At the end of Gears 2 humanity thought they had won, that the war was truly over but they only found another enemy that was infecting the Locusts and wanted everything to die, The Lambent. When this was discovered the surviving humans retreated yet again to an island thought to be safe from the Locusts and the Lambent….So this is where Gears of War 3 begins…
Gears 3 shows that no one can sit idly by while others defend them in this the “final” installment everyone must pick up a Lancer and fight! This trailer is truly FANtastic being made by Fans and not Epic it really pulls some emotion out of you
Now this final Video screams BAD ASS with the immortal Black Sabbath’s War Pigs driving home the desire to play this damn game!!!
Now if I ever meet you Cliff Bleszinski I would love to shake your hand for the awesomeness that is Gears of War then punch you square in the forehead for never fixing the multiplayer in Gears 2! Ahhh if only, here’s some multiplayer gameplay footage from the beta…

The Gears of War 3 beta is in full swing now and on May 8th the guys at Epic Games are releasing the “Never Fight Alone” part of the beta. Now this will not be open to everyone. People who pre-ordered Gears 3 or have Bulletstorm will have access but they will also have a chance to get a friend access with a “buddy token”. These tokens will be emailed out to players on May 8th, however you gotta give a little to get a little. To earn the tokens you must complete a few things by May 4th. They are:
– Purchase any “Gears of War” content from Xbox Live Marketplace (including a “Gears of War” Game Add-on, a “Gears of War” Games on Demand title, or a “Gears of War” Avatar item)
– Play 20 or more hours of the “Gears of War 3” beta (any time already spent in the beta will count toward this challenge)
– Add a 12-month Xbox Live Gold subscription to your existing account (purchased from retail or online)
– Play more than 100 hours of any “Gears of War” title, lifetime to date
So time to get to work earning some tokens. Also check back here sometime this week because I will announce a chance to play the Gears of War 3 beta with a couple of our writers , myself included.
Did you see the awesome gameplay at E3? Were you getting excited about Gears of War 3 in the spring?? Well allow me to crush those dreams for you. Gears 3 had a launch date of April 5, 2011. Well now you will have to wait until the Fall of 2011. The reason? No one knows. Microsoft has come out and said “Gears of War 3 promises to be the biggest entertainment launch of 2011” and “The teams at Microsoft Game Studios and Epic Games have done great work thus far readying the title for release in the Spring of 2011. However, we’ve elected to move the launch of Gears of War 3 until Fall 2011 to make it the marquee title for the holiday season.” There has been speculation that they moved the launch date for Gears 3 to make more room for Epic Games other title Bulletstorm which is set to release Feb 22, 2011. One has to wonder though is Bulletstorm going to be good enough to keep our attention away from Gears 3 getting pushed back? Not sure. We’ll just have to wait…..even longer now.
