No Mods or Bots in Diablo 3

Blizzard announced today that they will not be adding Bots or Mod support into Diablo 3, additionally it will be offically not allowed by the Terms of Service.  Diablo 3 will feature a player driven economy that will allow them to sell their hard earned loot for gold or cash.  This means there will also be no offline mode  and it will require you to have a active internet connection to play the game.

“For a variety of gameplay and security reasons, we will not be supporting bots or mods in Diablo III, and they’ll be expressly prohibited by our terms of use for the game.  Expressly prohibited, not just unsupported but illegal by the Diablo 3 ToS. A sad day considering how big and active the Diablo 2 modding community still is. Will we still see new mods and updates for Diablo 2 in-spite of this announcement or will the players merge over to the game similar to the Left 4 Dead and Left 4 Dead 2 modding scene?” said ModDB

It’s been a rough few years for the modding community with big name publishers removing mod support and why not, if players aren’t allowed to release free content then the only way for users to get new, fresh content will be for them to purchase it.  It’s a most ingenious and evil system and publisher giants such as Activision have proved that they can charge $60 for a game and then another $60 in additional content.  This doesn’t even include the cute little xbox, ps3 or pc themes you can buy either.  On the flip side this has been good for indie developers like Egosoft, which has one of the most moddable games in history.

With the fall of big publishers from the modding community indie developers featuring  games such as X3, Minecraft,  Mount & Blade, Amnesia and many others are taking their place and are getting quite a following.  Check out the Mount & Blade forums lately?  I see this as nothing more then developer greed and I’m honestly not suprised by it.  When I saw the announcement that Diablo III was going to consoles I knew it was only a matter of time before the game was locked down.  It’s sad to see really.
