More than 1.1 million fans join the global Zerg invasion

More than 1.1 million eSports fans tuned in to the launch broadcast for StarCraft II’s Heart of the Swarm. The launch showcased a massive 21-hour broadcast of launch events and at the end of the first two days after launch the game had sold around a million copies worldwide. Events included a Heart of the Swarm tournament at the Major League Gaming Winter Championship in Texas and we definitely agree with Blizzard CEO and co-founder Mike Morhaime who says in a press release “In addition to a brand-new single-player campaign, we added a ton of enhancements with this expansion to make StarCraft II even more fun to play, and more exciting to watch”. Although StarCraft has always been a popular game on Twitch, since the launch of the new expansion they’ve noted an uptake in viewers and also gamers streaming on Twitch, they reported a peak concurrent viewership of more than 157,000 viewers – not bad.

Battle.net World Championship Shanghai

battlenet championship image

On November 17th and 18th in Shanghai, the Battle.net World Championship will take place which includes the StarCraft Global Final and the World of Warcraft Global Arena Final. This is a great opportunity to see some amazing eSport action and see some of the best players in the world battling for a prize pool totaling $189,000, this year first prize is $105,000, second prize is $45,000, third prize is $27,000 and 4th prize is $12,000. Ten top WoW Arena teams from around the globe are coming to Shanghai to face off for the title of 2012 Global Champion after battling their way through the regional and national and continental finals. Also in the WoW camp, in addition to the arena final, we will see two five-player teams from raiding guilds, Stars and Supreme Quicksand, undertaking challenge mode runs in the Shado-Pan Monastery, Scarlet Halls, or Stormstout Brewery. They will also be taking on the heroic version of Mogu’shan Vaults which should be exciting.

Personally I’m never going to be in the same league as these guys, but I love to watch them play. The last tournament I got to watch live was at Gamescom for League of Legends and so I can imagine that it would be great to be in Shanghai for this one. For more information on the event and the latest information visit http://www.battlenet.com.cn/bwc/en/, you will also be able to watch a live stream of the tournament there.

I’ll keep you updated as more details become available!
