The Debacle that is Aliens:Colonial Marines
A few of us here were pumped for this game, a good take on the Aliens franchise, a co-op campaign, looked like it could be scary at times, and the dreaded ping of the motion detector. We were excited till the game was universally panned and the game is nothing of what they kept displaying in demos. To show how big of a wreck the game is the people over at videogamer.com (I found via Kotaku) have put on display how varied the game is from demo to actual product. Now granted the demo is a work in progress and typically some things here and there change, but not this drastically and for the worse. Typically a game is as the demo or if not better due to more time in the developmental process, though not the story they show. Whole characters removed, lighting dubbed down, sections reworked for the worst; there are some major, drastic changes. The video does a great job of highlighting the differences and to note they are playing the game on the max setting on the PC version, apparently the console version is even uglier. Kotaku has a good article on how the development fell apart to end up with the broken and ugly game that was released on Tuesday. It is sad to see such a great franchise have another black mark. Hopefully with this game now swept and under the rug we can have a full, unaltered production of a good Aliens game that does the franchise proud.
