Twisted Tales of Metal and Mayhem


With the next generation platforms still unforseen we come to find that our gaming industry needs to actually push the limits of our systems.  Nowhere is this more aparent than in the Sony brand.  We have, since release, seen many exclusives show mind blowing graphics and create long stories within the realm of a game, however, we have only scratched the surface of what the system is capable of and that is where David Jaffe comes in.  Since Sony initially launched the Playstation back in 1994 it has been a staple in the gaming society.  David Jaffe helped make the Playstation a household name with his exclusive releases on the Sony consoles a few of which would be Twisted Metal (series) and God of War (series).  David has been kicking around the same idea for Twisted Metal since its incarnation to the public back in 1995.  He has been adament about having realistic style cars ripping one another to shreds along with helicoptors and many other wild rides.
Not only has his carnage running wild through the carmagedon but the most drawing aspect of the game is its well known and beloved characters.  Anyone who has ever played a Twisted Metal title is sure to know Sweet Tooth.  This crazed clown in back from “:Black”(Twisted Metal title) and seeking revenge on the “one who got away”.  These characters have drawn in crowds from game to game and have seen a multitude of changes, upgrades, and yet still sport some sort of continuity.  Though the character ideas themselves are a reason to take a look it is their tale of horror and woe that brings in the true fans.  The name of the game says a lot in many ways about what this game truly is.  Simply twisted, dark, morbid, and demented are all things that are initially brought the the forefront of my mind to describe them.  Some of the sickest stories ever told make the Saw movie series seem a bit Disney-esque.


The latest release of Twisted Metal is finally coming to PS3 and is sporting most of what Jaffe wanted from the title out of the box.  He finally got helicoptors and wide open multiplayer with the game boasting multiple modes of online play.  There will be a ranked and casual version of online play for the competitive and noncompetitive alike.  There will be so far seen 3 game modes and more are said to be behind lock and key until launch.  The videos shown at E3, and other shows presents to us a generous variety of vehichle in which to tear our opponents to mear meat piles.  With the new release to this system comes the ability to create a custom car to combat with and design as we all know makes the heart grow fonder.  It is unclear whether or not the custom cars will be online playable but we are hoping so for the benefit of all.  The release date has been kicked around back and forth for a while recently but as of today it is set to drop on February 14, 2012(A perfect bloody Valentines day gift for your man ladies.) this date was from the pushback as its original date was to be Oct. 4 2011. Jaffe had this to say on the Playstation Blog, “Now, if we shipped Twisted Metal tomorrow – going off the response from folks who have played it – I assure you, it would never be a bad game. Not even close. But we’re aiming for a heck of a lot more than that! With Twisted Metal we plan to ship a multiplayer classic. We plan to ship the best Twisted Metal ever made. We plan to convert a lot of folks who think vehicle combat is a relic best left to 90′s nostalgia. And we plan to explode the belief that the only relevant kind of shooter is a first person one (or a 3rd person one, where you play a human… with a tee shirt not all the way tucked in 🙂 …).”  This is why we love and hate the industry but this man has never let us down on one of his titles and refuses to do so now.

    Keep in mind David Jaffe created this company himself with Scott Campbell to do their own projects without hindrance or red tape in the bureaucracy of being a developer of a third party company. They have done this within their own company and with a relatively small crew. Personally, though the graphics aren’t pushed, the capacity of a consoles processes and available memory will be tested with true particle augmentation. A single bullet is just that, a single bullet. Only what is hit is counted as a hit, not like most games where if a series weapon animation hits at all, even after only the first bullet hits it’s counted a full hit from all bullets this engine is supposed to calculate every particle. I hope to find out more from devs.

    Twisted looks to be living up to it’s lineage and truly being “twisted” the footage shown here looks pretty good but the graphics look a little dated but maybe that just the video… but I love what I’ve seen so far for this title looks like a lot of fun and also looks to be bringing back some gaming styles from the good ole days…
