Valves online Steam service hacked
Some of you may have noticed that the Steam forums were shut down last weak and are still down. This is the result of Steam being hacked. The actual steam service remains functional but the forums will remain down until Valve gets things sorted out. Until then no joy for the Steam forum.
The intruders gained access to a Steam user database containing “user names, hashed and salted passwords, game purchases, email addresses and encrypted credit card info”.
Despite that fact that as of yet there is no evidence to suggest that card numbers or identifiable information have been taken, or the encryption on said information was broken, users would be wise to monitor there bank accounts more closely in the following weeks.
In the mean time while Valve investigates the intrusion users will have to deal with the forums being down and while there isn’t a force password change being pushed through to accounts, as there is no knowledge of any steam accounts being compromised, it is a good idea to change your Steam password. When the forums come back up there will be a forced password change for the forum login.
Lets just hope this doesn’t turn into another Sony incident, Valve may not be as large as Sony but they are big enough and a deep hack could shatter Valves credibility if not handled delicately. Either way prepare for your “inbox” to blow up with solicited spam and be cautious of any unrecognized emails as they may contain viruses.
