XCOM a Refreshing Deviation From The Mainstream

First I must say that I am sorry that I have been gone so long.  Between work and school I have had absolutely no time for anything.  Thankfully things are starting to trim back a bit for me so I should able to start bringing you guys quality articles again.  Thanks for sticking with me and a big thank you to Cat and Cab to keeping things lively around here.

I finally got some time to game the other day and decided to pick up XCOM: Enemy Unkown.  Funny thing is that I had no idea what to expect with this game.  I actually expected an FPS and what I got was something completely different.  It’s actually a turn based strategy game and I didn’t expect that at all… and that’s refreshing in itself.

I’ve noticed a trend lately with games and it’s following… over the top action, monotony, and gameplay that is so easy and guided that a zombie could do it.  Speaking of which there are some of those in XCOM but thats another story.  This game actually makes you think when you play.  You cannot just send your squad into the fray and then expect to come out unscathed with kittens and unicorns singing your praises.  There is a solid finality to the game, especially if you play in the games realistic mode which does not allow you to save.  Once you make a decision it is final and it can be heart breaking.  You lose an experienced of your squad and it can be detrimental to your game.

The maps are varied so your stragegies always have to plan out your attack.  The combat is ever so exciting and some of the dialogue is very amusing.  So far I am really enjoying XCOM: Enemy Unknown (PC) I would recommend picking this gem up.

How many of you have had a chance to play XCOM so far?  What do you think?

I was in love with this game back in the 90s for just the same reason and I see (at least by playing a demo) they streamlined it a little but other than that it still holds the intensity of the original game. This is the only series of games that I actually cared about my squaddies because like you said you can lose that experience that member has if they are killed or wounded. I haven’t picked this one up but will be doing so in the future for sure
